PATO BANTON

Pato Banton (born Patrick Murray, 28 January 1961) is a reggae singer and toaster from Birmingham, England. He received the nickname 'Pato' (Jamaican Patois for "wise owl") from his stepfather, and 'Banton' from the disc jockey slang for a "heavyweight DJ". First known for his collaborations with the English Beat, UB40, and Sting, Pato is now known best for his multi generational live shows, where crowds chant the choruses “Go Pato!” and “Stay Positive!” to two of his most famous songs with the same name as the choruses, respectfully.

Special Performance by Jakob Nowell.

Jakob Nowell

Following in the footsteps of a famous parent can be difficult, but the path can be even tougher when one also battles the demon of addiction. Jakob Nowell, frontman for Long Beach, Calif., hard rockers LAW, understands this well. It is not so much that he is living in the shadow of his father, late singer Bradley Nowell from Sublime. In fact, he feels blessed that interest in his heritage is helping him build a buzz for his own music. But his father struggled with heroin addiction and succumbed to it in 1996, not quite a year after Jakob’s birth and shortly before the release of the band’s third album, Sublime, which ironically became a multiplatinum hit. Later on, Jakob battled the bottle for nearly a decade, and is now sober.

“I’ve always really liked the stage,” declares Jakob. “Being an entertainer and a performer has always really resonated with me. I think there’s a lot that one could do onstage that they can’t do off of it. Personally, I feel more comfortable up there in front of an audience than I do on the ground floor talking to people.”

His family started the Nowell Family Foundation in 2017 to offer financial aid to members of the music community seeking treatment for addiction. They are currently raising funds for Bradley’s House, a planned six-bed recovery facility to provide treatment for those in the industry struggling with opiate addiction and lacking the means to get help. Kellie Nowell, Jakob’s aunt, is executive director of the foundation.

Seven Seas Music and Value Culture welcome you to a free music concert Friday November 5th, 2021 from 4pm-7pm at the music bandshell in Golden Gate Park celebrating Afghani artists. Both Seven Seas Music, an international music discovery and licensing platform, and Value Culture, a non-profit presenting organization, are local burgeoning businesses embracing world culture. This concert reinforces Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights that everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression. This concert is in partnership with Illuminate , the San Francisco Parks Alliance, and the International Rescue Committee (IRC). The concert is free and open to all ages. More information available at www.valueculture.org.

Welcome to Afghanistan will feature Afghani artists Kabul Dreams, Mozhdah, and Qais Essar.

[Kabul Dreams]

Conceived in the underground scene of Afghanistan’s capital 13 years ago, Kabul Dreams has since become the country’s most celebrated rock group with their indie garage-rock sound and potent lyrics. The band consists of Sulyman Qardash (lead singer and guitarist), Siddique Ahmed (bassist) and Jai Dhar (drummer).

As Afghanistan’s first rock band, they took significant risks to follow their passion with many critics calling their music “Western propaganda”, resulting in death threats from the Taliban and ultimately forcing them to relocate to the US. But they preserved, and went on to release critically acclaimed albums, Plastic Words, Megalomaniacs, and With Love From Kabul Dreams, with songs in both English and Dari – Afghanistan’s most widely spoken language. Their English songs help express their country’s plight to the world, while their Dari songs celebrate the positive changes the country has seen over the past 20 years offering inspiration to the Afghan people.

Their music has since caught the world’s attention, including Metallica’s, and the band continues to stand by their fellow Afghans and fight for freedom as “now more than ever, we need to be shouting from the rooftops.”

[Mozhdah]

Mozhdah never calls herself the “Oprah of Afghanistan”. That’s just the name her adoring global audience—which includes individuals like Barack and Michelle Obama as well as Ms. Winfrey herself—has given her. That’s because, like Oprah, this Kabul-born, Vancouver-based icon has sparked conversations and inspired women all over the world as a bold, big-hearted example of female leadership.

Through her internationally renowned music career and groundbreaking television show The Mozhdah Show, Mozhdah has inspired profound respect and serious controversy in equal measure. She’s the first Afghani artist to produce hit records in English, capturing a global audience and performing on international stages. She’s the first Afghani woman to brave death threats in order to host her own talk show and cover sensitive subjects impacting Afghani women and children. She’s the first Afghani female artist to perform in the White House, or appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show, or express her mission of empowerment on CNN.

A singular voice in music and media, she’s risked everything in order to express herself—along with the deepest hopes of women across the planet.

[Qais Essar ]

Qais Essar is a contemporary Afghan composer, instrumentalist and producer who channels his melodic designs through the rabab, a 2,500-year-old instrument from Afghanistan. He has toured extensively, sharing his new genre of music nationally and internationally.

Essar has released two LPs, four EPs and one live album. His first LP, The Green Language (2014), quickly became an Amazon #1 bestseller, followed by his second LP, Tavern of Ruin in 2016. He has contributed original music to feature films also. In 2017, Qais was recruited by director Nora Twomey to compose an original song for her Golden Globe and Oscar-nominated film, The Breadwinner (produced by Angelina Jolie). He earned a Canadian Screen Award nomination for "Best Original Song" for his piece The Crown Sleeps. Additionally, he orchestrated a sold-out run of the musical Tear a Root from the Earth at the OBIE award winning Ice Factory at the New Ohio Theatre in New York City.

Essar continues to be featured in festivals and venues around the world including the Newport Folk Festival, SXSW, The Kennedy Center, Treefort Music Festival and more. Essar released his 3rd LP, The Ghost You Love Most in 2018 to critical acclaim.

[Music Bandshell at Golden Gate Park, San Francisco]

Live music has returned to the Golden Gate Bandshell’s iconic stage with a series of free outdoor concerts in Golden Gate Park, courtesy of Illuminate, the San Francisco Parks Alliance, and community partners. The free, all-ages concerts will run through the end of 2021, with Singer-Songwriter Wednesdays, Jazz and Soul Fridays, Cultural and Community groups on Saturdays, and Reggae Sundays, as well as many special events.

The free concert series was planned for Golden Gate Park’s 150th anniversary in 2020, a yearlong celebration put on by the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department and the San Francisco Parks Alliance. While the series kickoff was delayed by the pandemic, the Golden Gate Bandshell was upgraded with a new stage, built-in theatrical lighting and state-of-the-art Meyer sound system.

The 120-year-old Golden Gate Bandshell is the oldest structure in Golden Gate Park’s Music Concourse, an open-air plaza built for the 1894 World’s Fair. Also called the Spreckels Temple of Music, the Bandshell was a gift to San Franciscans from sugar magnate Claus Spreckels.

Value Culture is very excited to be a partner of this fall's major art event...

Night Watch by Shimon Attie

*The San Francisco Bay Area’s First Multi-City Art Event in 2021*

The west coast debut of Shimon Attie’s Night Watch, a floating media installation that will travel the San Francisco Bay, will take place September 17 – 19, 2021, along the shorelines of San Francisco, Berkeley, and Oakland, California.

Night Watch is a floating, art installation that combines contemporary LED-technology with an historic mode of water transport – a barge – to create a sophisticated and layered artistic and sculptural work of art.

Night Watch features twelve, close-up video portraits of refugees who were granted political asylum in the United States. Displayed on a 20 ft-wide, high-resolution LED-screen, the portraits will travel aboard a slow-moving barge to allow for on-shore public viewing. The silently displayed images largely feature members of international LGBTQI communities, as well as unaccompanied minors, who fled tremendous violence and discrimination in their homelands of Colombia, Honduras, Jamaica, Kazakhstan, Nigeria, Peru, and Russia.

The 2018 New York City debut of Night Watch during the UN General Assembly Week was received with widespread acclaim, including in The New York Times and The Art Newspaper. Beginning on the eve of September 17, 2021 and on September 18 and September 19, Night Watch will travel aboard a barge captained by Matt Butler and slowly navigate the city shorelines from 6:15pm to 8:15pm, corresponding with scheduled live, nightly performances on the coastal shorefronts.

NIGHT WATCH SCHEDULE

Friday, Sept. 17: Fort Mason, Aquatic Park, Rincon Park (San Francisco)

Saturday, Sept 18: Fort Mason, Aquatic Park, Warm Water Cove (San Francisco)

Sunday, Sept. 19: Jack London Square, Berkeley Marina (Oakland and Berkeley)

Night Watch Schedule and Map Link

Night Watch partner activated live performances include artists, musicians, dancers, speakers, and storytellers, and will take place across the Bay Area with scheduled shoreline events in San Francisco, Oakland, and Berkeley.

Off-site events in collaboration with Night Watch partner organizations, exhibitions and additional screenings at select partner institutions, will also take place at the Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, California College for the Arts, Catharine Clark Gallery, Congregation Emanu-El, Cal Sailing Club, Gray Area Foundation for the Arts, Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture, Oakland’s Jack London Square, Minnesota Street Project, Museum of African Diaspora, PhotoAlliance, San Francisco Art Institute, UC Berkeley Arts + Design, and University of San Francisco. Music and dance performances for site activations around the Bay are selected by Classical Revolution and Dance Film SF.

Partnerships with non-profit organizations representing the needs of refugees will provide educational materials and resources to the public online and at the live performance sites; Catholic Charities, Center for Refugee & Gender Studies, International Rescue Committee, Oasis Legal Services, Partnership for Trauma Recovery, and Roots Community Health Center.

“For the millions who have been forced to flee their homelands to escape violence and discrimination. For the fortunate few who have been granted political asylum in the United States.” – Shimon Attie, Artist, Night Watch

The Ethiopian Israeli International musician, Gili Yalo combines an Ethiopian musical legacy with genres such as funk, jazz, & soul.

Gili Yalo’s music embodies his own personal story, and what a story he has to tell: Operation Moses was the covert evacuation of Ethiopian Jews from Sudan during a famine in 1984. These Ethiopian Jews fled from their native land on foot to refugee camps in Sudan.

Together with his family, Gili Yalo made this perilous trip, walked through the desert towards the “Promised Land” and sang to his beloved ones. In the course of this exhausting and emotional journey, the music encouraged Gili and his family to keep on moving. An entrancing rhythmic motion is apparent when listening to Gili’s music, from the groove, beat and flow, and up to the lyrics, concept and style of the project. Today Gili Yalo’s music gives a new meaning to traditional Ethiopian music. The expression of his story through an advanced music production represents his own personal triumph.

After a big success of his first record released last year, touring the world and receiving high critical praise internationally, Gili Yalo returns with a new release. The new EP, “Made in Amharica,” is a result of Gili Yalo’s cooperation with Grammy Award nominee (Best R&B Album and Best Traditional R&B Performance for Leon Bridges’ LP “Coming Home”) Niles City Sound. The songs are a collaboration between Gili Yalo and Dallas-based musicians in the high-end, vintage-equipped Niles City Sound recording studios in Fort Worth. Gili Yalo combines modern sound, Ethiopian roots, funk and jazz, and a deep soulful feeling. “Made in Amharica” is step forward – with American musicians and a production team with the best vintage analogue equipment the soul and R&B flavor of Gili’s music is stronger than ever.

This Wednesday, April 7th, we want to invite you to join us on 👋#clubhouse at 10 am PST for a unique program in observance of Israel's day of commemoration for the six million Jews who perished in the Holocaust. #yomhashoah

We will be hosting five survivors who have found purpose in educating the world about the Holocaust. Please join us in welcoming our honored guests:

✨Inge Auerbacher is a world-renowned author who has published many books about her experiences throughout the Holocaust. She tells her life story in three books, "I am a Star"- Child of the Holocaust, "Beyond the Yellow Star to America," and "Finding Dr. Schatz."

✨Marie Doduck is the co-founder of the Vancouver Holocaust Education Centre. An outspoken leader who shared her life story with many continues to educate the youth as antisemitism is rising in Canada.

✨Eva Perlman, the author of Eva's Uncommon Life, details the first of many miracles that kept her family alive. "After adventures, travel, and hardships, she ultimately found her purpose as a Holocaust survivor educating Jewish teens on the Living's annual March.

✨Rose Holm and her husband Joe joined the armed resistance at the early age of 19, and they carried out dozens of missions together. They escaped Germany and eventually immigrated to the US, where Rose has shared the Jewish partisans' legacy and the importance of teaching "kids to fight back. To speak up."

✨Sami Steigmann is a motivational speaker dedicated to reaching as many young people as possible nationally and internationally to promote tolerance and a better world for all. His advice to the young people: "NEVER BE A PERPETRATOR. But most importantly, NEVER, EVER BE A BY-STANDER."

To educate yourself further into the stories of these survivors check out the links in our bio.

This sparkling new private social club is h.wood’s group first San Francisco space. The company popular with celebrities is responsible for some of the most iconic brands in the world, including Delilah, The Nice Guy, and Bootsy Bellows in Los Angeles. These “underground” events were all offline and word of mouth, list only, and buzzed about in the creatives and arts community. Unplugged Mansion Shabbat + Anna of the North Concert

Note: This is a special event experience only found in SF put on by Value Culture.
1) 6pm-9pm Unplugged Shabbat Dinner at historic @Haas Lilienthal Mansion. Celebrate the National Day of Unplugging by Unplugging...in a mansion. Unplugged explained by author, filmmaker, community builder Tiffany Shlain and family.
2) 9pm-12AM-ish Anna of the North Concert at historic Great American Music Hall.
3) Maybe we'll keep it going somewhere VIP awesome...( and we did with an after party at Lower Mason, with the rockstar Anna of the North and her band)

1) Dinner includes plenty of food & drinks (open bar alcohol). Challah and Apple Pie from Grand Bakery of Oakland, CBD sparkling water from DayTrip, and Beer from Palmia and HolyCraft. Short universal Shabbat Experience (don't have to be Jewish), Unplugging, and more.

2) Anna of the North Concert at the Great American Music Hall. Who is she? OMG, you are in for a treat. The music of Anna of the North, an Oslo-based Norwegian singer-songwriter, has been regarded as "soft, soul-baring electro-pop". Her shows have been selling out across the country and this one will too.

1+2) What does Shabbat Dinner and an Anna of the North concert have in common. They are both awesome, and have songs about fire. Let's get unplugged, connect over the fire, and have a night full of joyful experiences you'll never forget. Experience 2 special San Francisco Heritage Legacy venues with historical San Francisco significance, the Haas Lilienthal House built in 1886, and the Great American Music Hall built in 1907, just a 15 minute walk from each other.

What is the National Day of Unplugging (NDU)?
A 24 HOUR GLOBAL RESPITE FROM TECHNOLOGY. IT HIGHLIGHTS THE VALUE OF DISCONNECTING FROM DIGITAL DEVICES TO CONNECT WITH OURSELVES, OUR LOVED ONES AND OUR COMMUNITIES IN REAL TIME.
JOIN US FOR NATIONAL DAY OF UNPLUGGING 2020 FROM SUNDOWN TO SUNDOWN, MARCH 6 - 7.

Why is this dinner $49?
It actually costs more to put this event on for you, you're getting a deal! This is a $100 value. Your concert ticket at a separate gorgeous venue has to be purchased which is $27. For the extra $22 you are provided with a quality yummy dinner, all you can drink alcohol, Adam surprises and a rented beautiful historical victorian (& Jewish) mansion for you to enjoy it all in. This event is subsidized and put on by Value Culture, a California Non Profit who's mission is to get you into culture and philanthropy of where you live. Thank you to One Table for helping provide some of the nourishment. San Francisco is 7 miles by 7 miles, 7x7=49. Know where you live, don't fear the give. If you can give more, support us at www.valueculture.org/

L'chaim! Keep it going after this month's Late Shabbat or wherever you are- head to Ireland's 32 (Geary & 3rd) for an after party beginning at 10pm-11pm. It's free to attend and a short 5 minute walk from the temple.
Presented by Value Culture (www.valueculture.org), Adam Swig, and the Emanu-El Young Adult Leadership Committee.
